The gearbox was one of the "bits" I was most unsure of. A fellow BMW enthusiast was kind enough to lend and send me his copy of the Ed Korn /2 rebuild video. It's essential viewing if your planning on rebuilding the gearbox yourself. At least it makes it all look easy. Just keep on telling yourself that "it's only a machine". This photo shows the gear selector mechanism and the two selector forks in place.

The complete output shaft has been installed. You can see the 3rd and 4th shift fork also in position. The shift fork moves the drive dog (the round disc) up and down to select either 3rd or 4th gear. In the neutral position it floats exactly in between the two gears.

In this photo all the gearbox mechanisms are complete. The input shaft, cluster gear and the output shaft have all had new bearings fitted. All that remains is for the end float of the shafts to be measured, shimmed and the gearbox cover to be fitted.

This is the complete gearbox. As they say, "the proof is in the eating" I won't know if all is well until I actually ride the bike. I had the clutch shift fork and the output drive flange re-zinc plated.

This is the complete gearbox mated to the engine. The finned exhaust nut is non-original for this model. I just like the look of it and hope that it will keep the cylinder head running cooler.
