ENGINE UNRESTORED

This is the engine prior to any restoration. The timing chain cover, sump, camshaft and cylinder have been removed. The timing chain was very loose, probably because the maximum size chain had been fitted and stretched. This engine must have rattled like a rattlesnake! The chain was so loose that it was throwing out, hitting and wearing away at the engine case(blue circle)

OLD PISTON

This is the old piston. The striations running along the piston are probably from what is called "picking up in the bore", that is when running conditions become so hot that the piston expands and sticks to the cylinder wall. This is usually followed by total seizure. If you look closely you can see a fine line (Red Arrow) running from the oil ring groove down around the wrist pin and again back up towards the oil ring groove. This is a crack; and it's on both sides of the piston.

My guess is that if this engine had been run hard for much longer the piston skirt would have separated from the crown and "BOOOM" one totally destroyed engine. Read Steve Cotsfords' story.

SCHRAPNEL IN THE ENGINE

This is what I found mixed in with the sludge at the bottom of the sump. It's a combination of oil ring, compression ring, aluminum, and some kind of rubber ring?

This engine has not lived a happy life

 CYLINDER HEAD

The cylinder head looked a lot better on the outside than on the inside, no broken fins. The valves were heavily recessed and you can see the damage done to the inside of the chamber, probably from a dropped valve.
